Issue 47: Embracing Creative Chaos
The messy, unpredictable, and freeing process of creative chaos
Hi Friends!
Have you ever heard the saying, "Chaos breeds creativity?" As two gals who love creative projects, we usually prefer an organized plan. Producing a podcast without talking points or writing a short story without an ending feels almost foreign. However, the few times we’ve attempted it, it has been freeing.
The idea of creative chaos once seemed unimaginable, but we’ve learned it takes practice. Just like meditation, yoga, or even floating on water, it's about training yourself to embrace forces that don't need to be resisted. In other ways, it keeps your creative mind sharp, gifting you new side projects, innovative pieces, business ventures, or film ideas.
Let us know how you've embraced creative chaos in the comments below!
With love,
Akina & Marissa
What’s Creative Chaos (And Why You Should Lean Into It)
We love how Psychology Today puts it: “Perhaps what we call chaos is actually creativity in the process of birthing new ordered forms.” In summary, creativity is a continuous process, and having a bit of disorder can do some good. Think of it as a guide that brings ideas from your subconscious to your conscious.
Remember, there’s a difference between welcoming chaos (feeling the warmth of the fire) vs. feeding chaos (throwing more sticks to build a bigger fire)
Here’s why we should lean into it:
Brain stimulation. Our brains are wired to look at patterns and make sense of chaos. Organizing chaos allows our brains to think creatively about structures and systems that work for us. Some of us are plotters, and others are pantsers.
Widens perspectives. Take it from our Ice Queen (Elsa). She saw her powers as harmful and chaotic, but once she let it go, she began to understand how to use her powers. Oh, and saves Olaf with his own personal flurry.
New outcomes. It’s true when they say it’s all a part of the journey. Think about your most memorable travel stories. Did it include a missed flight or getting lost unintentionally? Chaos sometimes gifts us with the best memories.
Releases pressure. Sometimes sh*t happens. Embracing chaos teaches us how to deal with unforeseen circumstances and uncertainty.
A Look Into Our Creative Chaos
Running Week to Weekend can be chaotic but in the most fulfilling way. Believe it or not, our publication was five years in the making! We both started as passionate creatives wanting to do our own thing and realized that by joining forces, we could make a greater impact.
If we’ve learned anything during this one-year journey, it’s the power of TAG TEAMING. Our schedules are wildly different, and we work opposite hours of the day. But through the process, we’ve learned to support one another and embrace creative chaos.
Here’s a brief look at what goes into our process:
Brainstorm newsletter ideas on the phone.
Akina drafts up the newsletter and sends it over to Marissa.
Set up a photoshoot to get assets. Akina tags along with Marissa to pick up the kiddos while discussing other items to add to the issue.
Plan coffee dates with other creatives in our community. We love meeting new people and discussing new ideas and life. Some cool peeps we had the chance to connect with –
(The Husk) and Lou and Pat from Creative Ground Studio!Marissa edits socials and sends them back to Akina.
Get on a call the next day and scrap the idea; come up with another idea.
Meet around noon and write/edit/cry/dance party until 6:30 pm, wrapping up the issue.
Add newsletter to the queue.
This Week’s Challenge: Turn One of These Items Gourmet
We love experimenting in the kitchen and watching this Iron Chef Dad turn things gourmet.
Try turning one of these items gourmet:
🧀 Lunchables
🍰 Box cake
🍞 Bread + cheese (we’re thinking gourmet grilled cheese)
