Issue 8: I Love you a LATKE 🥔
It's National Potato Lover's Month and because of our love for them tates!
Hi Friends!
Happy FRY-day 🍟 Have we told you lately how much we love you A LATKE! Since starting this newsletter in January, we’ve been overwhelmed by the endless support and feedback we’ve gotten, pushing us to continue growing just like a little spud :)
While we decided on February’s month as “Creative Love,” it’s also National Potato Lover’s Month and National Haiku Writing Month. We did a call for submissions for potato-inspired haikus because what would be a more creative way to express our love for those tasty (and fried) tots?
Still don’t know what the heck a latke is? Read on to learn more about this popular Jewish potato dish 🥔
We also wanted spark some creativity into your week to weekend. Enjoy our curated week-to-weekend guide for this week!
Cheers,
WW Team
💕 For the Love of Potatoes & Haikus
🥔 For the Love of Latkes
The tradition of making Latkes stems from the divine intervention that occurred more than 2,000 years ago in the ancient Jerusalem temple; one night’s worth of oil lasted eight nights and it was referred to as the eternal flame. This miraculous event later became the reason why Jews feasted on fried food during the holiday season. Latkes were originally made out of cheese but were eventually modified to potatoes due to its abundance and affordability.
So you may be asking, “Oooook, so what does this have to do with Guam? And it is no longer the holidays?!”
Good question! Besides our love for introducing food from other cultures (and because we’re celebrating National Potato month), we wanted to spotlight this yummy and budget-friendly dish that’s easy to make. Did we also mention that we’re putting a local spin on it 😉
We made Country Brown Latkes inspired by one of our favorite breakfast dishes at King’s! King’s Country Brown is hash browns topped with rich country gravy, diced Chamorro sausage, and topped with two eggs - a popular and delicious choice when hungover.
Potato puns to text your pops or your kids (because who doesn’t love a great dad joke? 🙊)
What do you call a reluctant potato? A hesi-tator
What kinda potato do you want to take home to your parents? A sweet potato
Why wouldn’t a reporter leave the mashed potatoes alone? He desperately wanted a scoop.
What do you get when it rains potatoes? Spuddles
What did the potato dad say to his potato daughter? I’m rooting for you
